Flameless LED candles: how to choose realistic real wax candles

Not all electric candles are equal. Some give themselves away from across the room, others still fool you from a few centimetres. Here is how to tell them apart, using our real wax LED candle as a reference point.

LED candle or real candle: what changes without a flame?
A flameless candle won't warm the room or release a scent as it burns. In exchange, it switches on in a second, with no smoke and nothing to keep an eye on. Here is what that means day to day.

6 things to check when choosing LED candles
You can check these points on any product page. Under each one, you'll see how ours measures up.

The flame
A flame stuck on the same loop is quickly spotted. Look for flickering LED candles with an irregular movement, closer to a real wick.

The material
Plastic shines and gives the candle away up close. Real wax has a grain, absorbs light and looks the part.

The light
Cold white ruins the effect instantly. Go for warm white, close to the glow of a flame, and a light that passes through the wax.

Batteries have to be bought and thrown away. Rechargeable LED candles solve that, as long as a charge lasts several evenings.

LED candles with a remote change how you use them: switch on and off from the sofa or the bed. A timer means one less thing to think about at bedtime.

How long it lasts
A sealed candle ends up in the bin the day its battery fades. Check that the battery can be replaced, and read the warranty length.

Where they don't belong
- Outdoors: this candle is made for indoor use only. For the garden or terrace, take a look at our solar lights.
- In contact with water: it isn't waterproof. Don't put it where it can get splashed, such as the edge of the bath or basin.
- Near a heat source: radiator, fireplace or direct sunlight. It's real wax, and it can melt.

LED candles: your questions
Are LED candles safe?
They remove the risks that come with a flame: no fire, no smoke, no soot. Two precautions remain: keep the remote and its coin cell out of reach of young children, and keep the candle away from heat sources, because the wax can melt.
Are LED candles any good?
It depends on the model. Real wax, a random flicker and a light that shines through the wax make all the difference, and that's what the Guirled candle brings together.
How long does a rechargeable LED candle last?
Ours gives more than 10 hours of light per charge. Switched off by remote, it lasts 30 days on standby; switched off with the button underneath, it holds its charge for up to 300 days.
How do I charge the candle?
With the USB-C cable provided, on any 5 V USB charger. The plug isn't included.
Are LED candles bright?
They create atmosphere, they don't light a room. At 50 lumens in warm white, it looks like a candle and won't replace a lamp.
Are LED candles waterproof? Can I use them in a bathroom or outside?
This one isn't waterproof. In a bathroom, yes, away from splashes. Outside, no: it's for indoor use only, so choose our solar lights instead.
Can the battery be replaced?
Yes. The 750 mAh lithium-ion battery is replaceable and sold separately, with a screwdriver to open the compartment. The candle comes with a 3-year warranty.
